Stag National Terms and Conditions

·       The Stag National is a community hobby horse race organised by The Stag Inn supported by Oak Tree Animals’ Charity and Eden Valley Hospice.

·       Participants take part at their own risk and must follow all steward instructions.

·       Under 18s must be registered by a parent or guardian.

·       The event is family-friendly. Costumes must be safe and appropriate.

·       As an outdoor event, timings and activities may change due to weather or safety requirements.

·       Photography and video will be taken for promotional use.

·       All proceeds from registrations, sponsorship and fundraising activities contribute to supporting the event and raising funds for both charities

·       By registering, participants confirm they accept these terms.

 

 

 THE STAG NATIONAL – OFFICIAL RACE RULES

Run fast. Jump honestly. Laugh loudly.

1. The Basics

  • All competitors must complete the course on foot using a hobby horse

  • Horses must be held between the legs at all times

  • The full course (all jumps) must be completed to finish

  • Participants take part at their own risk

  • Children must be supervised by a parent/guardian

  • The Stag National Committee reserve the right to stop any race if safety is a concern

2. The Hobby Horse

  • Must be homemade (brooms, mops, curtain poles are all good starting points)

  • Must be safe (no sharp edges or loose parts)

  • Must be ridden throughout the race (no carrying under the arm!)

3. The Jumps

  • All jumps must be attempted

  • At least one clear attempt must be made at each obstacle

  • If a jump is knocked:

    • The runner must pause briefly and step back over it before continuing

  • Deliberately avoiding a jump = disqualification

4. Fair Play

  • No pushing, blocking, or obstructing other runners

  • Respect other competitors, volunteers, and spectators

  • Any unsafe behaviour may result in removal from the race

5. Safety First

  • Suitable footwear must be worn (no bare feet, no heels)

  • Fancy dress is encouraged—but must be safe to run in

  • Listen to marshals at all times

6. Race Categories (TBC depending on number of entries)

To keep things fair and fun, you can split into:

  • Children’s Races

  • Adults Race

  • Team Relay

7. Winning & Prizes

  • First across the finish line wins

  • Judges may also award:

    • Best Dressed Horse and Rider

    • Best Hobby Horse

    • Funniest Fall (crowd favourite)

    • Most Enthusiastic Rider

    • Most Creative Horse Name

 8. The Spirit of the Day

  • This is a fun, charity event

  • A little chaos is expected—and encouraged

  • If you fall… get up, laugh, and carry on
