Welcome to a New Chapter at The Stag Inn

Every good pub has a story.

Some are written over centuries, shaped by the people who pass through the doors, the meals shared around tables, and the conversations that linger long after the last glass is emptied. The story of The Stag Inn is still being written — and today marks the beginning of a new chapter.

Over the past months we’ve been thinking carefully about what a pub should be. For us, the answer is simple. A pub should be a place where people come together. Somewhere to gather with friends, celebrate with family, stop after a long walk, or simply enjoy good food and conversation.

That idea now sits at the heart of everything we do.

A place to gather

The traditional village pub has always been about more than food and drink. It has been a meeting point for the community — a place where stories are shared and people feel welcome.

Our aim at The Stag is to build on that tradition while creating something that feels fresh and thoughtful. A pub that is relaxed and welcoming, but also focused on quality: good ingredients, good cooking and an atmosphere that encourages people to stay a little longer.

Upstairs we have created a space called Gather, designed especially for shared dining and events. With its exposed beams and warm atmosphere, it’s a place where groups can sit around the table and enjoy food served generously, in the spirit of bringing people together.

Cooking with fire

Food is central to what we do, and our kitchen is built around the simple idea that great ingredients should be treated with care.

Much of our cooking is done over charcoal on our Kasai grill, which gives meat, fish and vegetables a depth of flavour that can’t be achieved any other way. Fire adds character to the food — something elemental that feels right in a pub setting.

Our menus focus on honest, seasonal cooking. It’s food that suits gatherings, long conversations and relaxed evenings.

A stop for walkers and travellers

We’re also fortunate to sit beside one of Britain’s most famous walking routes, the Hadrian's Wall Path, which passes right by our door.

Throughout the year we welcome walkers making their way along the Wall — sometimes stopping for a quick drink, sometimes settling in for a well-earned meal after a long day on the trail.

It’s something we love about being here. The pub becomes part of people’s journeys.

Looking ahead

This journal is a small window into life at The Stag Inn.

Here we’ll share stories from the kitchen, introduce some of the people behind the pub, explore local walks and suppliers, and talk about the ideas that shape what we do.

Most of all, it’s a place to celebrate the simple pleasure of gathering around a table.

Whether you’re joining us for dinner, stopping by after a walk, or visiting the area for the first time, we hope The Stag Inn feels like somewhere you’re always welcome.

We look forward to sharing the next chapter with you.
